Excerpt from M. Caelius Rufus, Abhandlung Von beiden Stellen (pr. Cael. II, 10 u. Ad. Attic. VII, auf die hin er dies behauptet, beweist nach meiner Meinung die eine gar nichts, wahrend die andere sich nicht auf den Vater, sondern auf den Sohn bezieht. Denn was die erstere anlangt, so spricht Cicero am Eingang der Rede für den Sohn wohl davon, dass der Vater von den Anklägern des Sohnes als parum splendidus bezeichnet worden sei durchaus aber erfahren wir nichts von der Meinung der Nobilität über ihn. Wollten wir die darauf folgenden Worte Ciceros in ihrem vollen Umfange gelten lassen, so würde der Vater sogar in höchster Achtung gestanden haben. Wenn wir nun auch davon gern etwas dem Redner, der für seinen Clienten eine gute Meinung erwecken will, nachsehen und vielleicht das Lob des Vaters für übertrieben halten, so folgt doch sicher aus dem Urtheil der Anklager nichts, was Drumann's Ansicht bestätigte. Ja, wenn wir' sehen, dass der Vater seinen jungen Sohn in das Haus des M. Crassus und des Cicero?) brachte, werden wir.auf eine gewisse Freundschaft mit diesen Mannern und Achtung, in der der Vater stand, schliessen. Die Stelle aber aus dem 3. Br. Des siebenten Buches an Atticus geht zweifellos auf den Sohn. Dieser Brief ist geschrieben a. D. V. Id. Dec. A. Also wenige Wochen vor der berühmten Senatssitzung3) an den Calenden des Januar, in welcher der Bürgerkrieg gewissermassen beschlossen wurde. Caelius, der Sohn, hatte damals schon angefangen, sich Caesar's Partei zuzuwenden') und war bemüht, den Cicero von Pompeius abzubringen. Dürfen wir uns also wundern, wenn wir aus dem December einen Brief von Cicero an Atticus haben, in welchem er schreibt: Unum etiam de Caelio: tantum abest ut meam ille sententiam moveat, ut valde ego ipsi, quod de sua sententia decesserit, paenitendum putem. Dass diese Worte sich auf den Sohn, nicht auf den Vater, auf die politische Parteistellung, nicht auf irgend ein Geschäft beziehen, scheint klar. Im Uebrigen wissen wir vom Vater nicht viel mehr, als dass er im in welchem der Sohn angeklagt wurde, ebenso wie seine Gemahlin noch lebte; er wohnte, wie es scheint, der Gerichtsverhandlung Ausserdem sei noch be merkt, dass er nicht in Rom selbst ansässig war, sondern in einem Municipium.
