Excerpt from Le Temple de Jérusalem: Monographie du Haram-Ech-Chérif, Suivie d'un Essai sur la Topographie de la Ville-Sainte Tout cet ensemble de souvenirs et de traditions se concentre dans la pierre nommée Eben Schaüya/1, dont nous avons rapidement indiqué les propriétés mystiques; suivant les rabbius, elle était placée dans le saint des saints, et s'élevait de trois doigts au-dessus de terre' c'est sur elle que dans le second Temple, aprés la disparition de l'arche, le grand prètre posait l'eucensoir quand il pénétrait dans le sanctuaire, le jour des expiations. Le sommet du Moriah consacré par d'anciennes traditions et par un culte antérieur a la construction du Temple, ne pouvait-il, par respect, avoir été laissé à découvert, et surgir du sol au milieu du saint des saints, connue il s'élève aujourd'lmi mème au milieu de la mosquée musulmane, comme le rocher de Neptune se voyait autrefois dans le sol de l'érechtbéion d'athènes? Le docteur Sepp, qui le premier a fait ressortir l'importance de ces rapprochements, penchait pour l'allirmative et considérait la roc/ee sacrée des musulmans comme la pierre fondamentale des Juifs. De mon côté, j'étais disposé à la mème conclusion et je faisais des voeux pour qu'elle fût confirmée par l'étude des localités. Avec quel respect nau rais-jc pas touché cette pierre, si en elfct elle avait appartenu au saint des saints, s'il m'eut été prouvé que sa surface vénérable avait porté l'arche d'alliance, les tables du Sinan, le gage matériel des promesses éternelles! Malheureusement, cette conjecture n'a pas résisté à l'examen des lieux; les considérations topographiques qui seront développées dans la suite de ce travail ont démontré qu'elle était inexacte. D'une part, la Sakhrah est trop au sud; de l'autre, elle n'est pas assez haute, sur elle ne s'élève que de sept mètres au-dessus de la partie la plus basse de la plate forme da Maman, et le saint des saints était à vingt-deux coudées ou plus de dix mètres aut-dessus du grand parvis enfin le système des canaux souterrains qui la traversent se rattache au service de l'autel des holocaustes, situé à l'e.rtc'rieur du Temple, devant la façade orientale.
