About the Book

There he was, below the bridge, half-naked, eyes blazing. He had a pair of burning torches. He ran them back and forth across his skin. He sipped from a bottle, breathed across a torch, and fire and fumes leapt from his lips. The air was filled with the scent of paraffin. He breathed again, a great high spreading flag of fire. He glared. He roared like an animal.

That summer, life had seemed perfect for Bobby Burns. But now it's autumn and the winds of change are blowing hard. Bobby's dad is mysteriously ill. His new school is a cold and cruel place. And worse: nuclear war may be about to start.

But Bobby has a wonder-working friend called Ailsa Spink. And he's found the fire-eater, a devil called McNulty. What can they do together on Bobby's beach Is it possible to work miracles Will they be able to transform the world

About the Author :
David Almond's first novel for children, SKELLIG, won the Whitbread Children's Book of the Year and the Carnegie Medal, and his second, KIT'S WILDERNESS, won the Smarties Award Silver Medal, was Highly Commended for the Carnegie Medal, and shortlisted for the Guardian Award. Following the further success of HEAVEN EYES, David is widely regarded as one of the most exciting and innovative children's authors writing today, and his books are bestsellers all over the world. David lives with his family in Newcastle-upon-Tyne.

Review :
There was no Harry Potter-style fanfare to accompany the publication last week of David Almond's latest children's book, a near-perfect piece of fiction that reads like a memoir, about a boy stepping softly into adolescence at the time of the Cuban missile crisis, a period of unparalleled tension. But Almond, who has adapted his prize-winning first novel Skellig for the Young Vic's Christmas show this year, will get his share of glory.

'The Fire Eaters' is a beautifully written story that is likely to carry off a major prize unless another author writes something still more sublime, in which case children - and adults who read the books published for their offspring - will be the winners.

In language that's both terse and poetic, Almond summons up the taut atmosphere of the time in 1962 when it seemed horribly possible that nuclear war was only days away. For Bobby Burns, living in a small house beside the sea in the north east, that global anxiety is echoed and intensified by fears about his father's health. On the verge of transition to secondary school and just starting to see his childhood friend Ailsa in a new, more tender, light, Bobby feels life's possibilities simultaneously opening out and closing down. The almost intolerably tense situation is made bearable by the close, supportive relationships that Bobby enjoys with his parents and the intimate community in
