Fourteen wide-ranging chapters by distinguished international scholars treat key aspects of the rapidly changing political and cultural scene in France from the First Republic, through the Consulate and Empire to the death of Louis XVIII in 1824. Falling into two interlinked parts, this collection of original essays explores new developments as well as continuities characterising the transition between the eighteenth century and the nineteenth. About the Author :
MAIRE CROSS is Senior Lecturer in French Studies at the University of Sheffield. Her publications include Early French Feminists, 1830-1940 (with Felicity Gordon), and The Feminism of Flora Tristan (with Tim Gray). Her research interest covers the history of nineteenth century political ideas and the politics of feminism in contemporary France. - DAVID WILLIAMS is Professor of French at the University of Sheffield. His has particular interest in Voltaire and Condorcet and is the author of numerous books and articles on the French Enlightenment, including Voltaire: Literary Critic, Voltaire: Political Writings and, most recently, The Enlightenment.
