About the Book

'Analog Electronics' is an undergraduate main course text dealing with the analysis and design of continuous-signal electronic hardware. No previous experience in the subject is assumed. Treatment throughout is at device/component level with sufficient explanation to enable the reader develop both an understanding of the principles involved and a proficieny in basic design. The material covers the analogue electronics syllabuses of the first 2 years of MEng, BEng and BSc courses in Electronics and related subjects, providing a foundation for more specialised work in final-year options and post-graduate studies. Each chapter begins by listing the coverage so that the reader can see at a glance the direction of the work. Over 50 worked examples are included in the text and more than 120 further graduated tutorial questions, with answers, provide readers with the opportunity to test their developing understanding and design ability. Although devoted mainly to analogue electroncis, pulse circuits are also included.

Table of Contents:
Part 1 introductory topics: basic concepts and terminology; circuit analysis; the basic electronic circuit. Part 2 electronic devices and components; temperature limitation; voltage limitation; performance of semiconductor devices - diodes and transistors; performance of passive components - resistors, capacitors and wound components; manufacturing costs. Part 3 small-signal amplifiers - basics: BJT; FET bias circuits; AC operation - coupling and bypass; AC performance; single-stage configurations. Part 4 frequency response: sinusoidal response of CR networks; general small-signal amplifier model; amplifier response at LF; amplifier response at HF; overall response of specific amplifiers; distortion; pulse response. Part 5 feedback: fundamentals; gain sensitivity; effect of feedback on frequency response and bandwidth; reduction of distortion using negative feedback; basic feedback arrangements; effect of feedback on input and output resistances; practical implementation of feedback. Part 6 small-signal amplifers - advanced topics: bootstrapping; biasing by current mirror; active loads; differential stage; darlington stage; complementary stage; cascode amplifier; cascaded amplifiers; tuned amplifier. Part 7 operational amplifiers: amplifier circuit analysis; ideal op-amp; non-ideal performance; some practicalities. Part 8 power amplifiers. Part 9 analogue signal generation and processing: signal generation - linear oscillators; analogue signal processing. Part 10 pulse circuits: discrete-component pulse circuits; op-amp pulse circuits. Part 11 power supplies: types of supplies; AC-DC supplies; DC-AC supplies; DC-DC supplies; voltage multiplication; batteries. Appendices: fourier representation; tuned circuits; component coding; preferred (E-series) component values; manufacturers'data sheets of selected devices and ICs.
