About the Book

This addition to the existing nine-volume "Dictionary of Labour Biography" is organized on a self-contained basis. The time span of the tenth volume covers the period of modern industrialism, from the late-18th century to the end of the 20th century. Living people are excluded. It is intended to include anyone who was active, at any level, in the organizations and institutions of the British labour movement, as well as those who influenced the development of radical and socialist ideas. Entries are on the same pattern as those for the "Dictionary of National Biography", but with many more bibliographical sources provided.

Review :
'...an unsurpassed resource for finding out a bit about the lives and thoughts of those who were active before us, and who built the ground on which we fight today. If you are able to get access to a reference library take an hour to look up the DLB. It is guaranteed that you will be fascinated and occasionally appalled, depending on whose entries you look at.' - Keith Flett, Socialist Review '...The whole work remains a monument to scholarship and the British people.' E.J. Hobsbawn, New Society
