Sur un fond losangé d'azur semé de fleurons rouges et d'or, apparait Jésus en croix; une ligature verte figurant la couronne d'epine ceint sa tète inclinée à droite et ornée du nimbe crucifèrc; une large draperie flottante lui sert de ceinture; ses pieds superposés l'un sur l'autre sont retenus par un seul clou; de ses mains, de ses pieds et de la blessure qu'il a reçue au côté droit, le sang s'échappe en ruisselant le long de la croix découle sur le flanc de la montagne et arrose dans sa course une téte décharnée dont les machoires gisent séparées. (l'est la mort que le sang divin va vivil' cr et ressusciter. Au pied de la croix se tiennent debout la sainte-vierge et le Disciple bien-aimé. Ces deux figures nimbées et magni fiquement drapées sont d'une pose admirable. La Vierge les mains jointes est vètue d'une robe bleue traînante que recouvre un manteau rose sa douleur profonde mais calme et resi guée, est pleine de grandeur et de noblesse. Son fils penche sa tète vers elle comme pour lui dire Femme voilà votre fils. La figure de saint Jean a quelque chose de plus abattu; il porte la main droite sur sa poitrine et de l'autre il tient un livre à riches fermoirs. Un manteau gris cendré et presque fermé, enveloppe sa tunique écarlate. Il a les pieds nus, tandis que la sainte-vierge et les Vertus sont chaussées de souliers noirs. Au-dessus dela traverse de la croix, dans un ciel étincelant de pourpre on distingue un disque et un croissant dorés à-demi efl'acés c'est le soleil et la lune qui assistent en témoins à ce grand événement et qui y prennent une part importante. On remarque aussi dans les angles des amortissements de ces divers tableaux des démons velus et horribles, des médaillons et. Des figures répandus ça et là et comme émues de cette scène lugubre. Ce sont les anges de paix qui pleurent la mort de notre divin Sauveur. Angeli pacte etiam flevere. Encore une fois, quelle belle et riche composition!
