About the Book

Dynamics and Control of Ocean Wave Energy Converters: Theory and Applications outlines the fundamental theory and applications of wave energy production techniques, with detailed explanations of the dynamics and hydrodynamics of wave energy converters. Methods and models of control are described next, including essential techniques from systems response and PID control to state space realization. Next, advanced reactive control techniques, such as Latching Control, Bang-Bang Control, and advanced optimal control algorithms, will be outlined. The final chapters show how to calculate optimal estimation for wave energy conversion using techniques such as Kalman Filters and Extended Kalman filters. Providing a range of problems and case studies to enhance understanding, this book will take readers from the essentials of wave energy conversion to advanced control techniques for responsive energy production.

Table of Contents:
1. Introduction 2. Hydrodynamics of Wave Energy Converters 3. Dynamics of Wave Energy Converters 4. Frequency Domain Analysis and Design 5. Response to Wave Field and Control Force 6. Time Domain Analysis and Design 7. Control of Wave Energy Converters 8. Optimal Control 9. Optimal Estimation in Wave Energy Conversion

About the Author :
Shangyan Zou is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Michigan Technological University (MTU). Prior to this appointment in 2022, he was a Postdoctoral Researcher in the Department of Civil and Construction Engineering at Oregon State University (OSU) from 2021 to 2022. And he was a Postdoctoral Researcher in the Department of Aerospace Engineering at Iowa State University (ISU) before joining the Pacific Marine Energy Center at OSU (from 2018 to 2021). He received his PhD in the Department of Mechanical Engineering-Engineering Mechanics at MTU in 2018. Dr. Zou has research interests in dynamics and control with applications to ocean renewables, multi-agent systems (autonomy), machine learning, optimization, and state estimation. Ossama Abdelkhalik is a professor in the Department of Aerospace Engineering at Iowa State University. Dr. Abdelkhalik received his Ph.D. in aerospace engineering from Texas A&M University, as well as a B.S. and M.S. degrees in aerospace engineering from Cairo University, Egypt. His research interests are in the areas of optimal control, modeling of dynamic systems, wave energy conversion, and space trajectory optimization. He authored and co-authored more than a hundred journal and conference articles. Dr. Abdelkhalik is Associate Fellow of AIAA, a senior member of the American Astronautical Society (AAS). Dr. Mohamed A. Shabara is a Principal Systems Development Engineer at Solar Turbines. Prior to that, he worked as a marine energy numerical modeling and analysis engineer at the National Laboratory of the Rockies (NLR). He holds a PhD in Aerospace Engineering from Iowa State University. His research focuses on numerical modeling, optimal control, and fluid–structure interactions.
