About the Book

Advances in Age-Related Macular Degeneration provides ophthalmologists and eye researchers an integrated approach to age-related macular degeneration, a leading cause of vision loss in aged people. In this book, international leading experts summarize the most recent findings of new imaging devices’ studies in AMD and highlight potential benefits and adaptations of new technologies. The book begins with the two core components essential for proper interpretation of imaging studies: relevant histologic features in AMD and basic principles of different imaging technologies. Sections then relate imaging features from the clinic with histological findings and showcase up-to-date information on retina in AMD and normal aging. The book also includes the basic science behind AMD, exploring genetics, animal models and hot topics such as OCTA imaging and the application of artificial intelligence in AMD. The integrated and translational approach of this book makes this an essential reference for researchers and clinicians in the field.

Table of Contents:
1. Introduction 2. Anatomy of the retina and choroid in AMD 3. Genetics in AMD 4. Animal models of AMD 5. New imaging devices in AMD 6. Early/intermediate AMD 7. Non-exudative neovascular AMD 8. Type 1/2 macular neovascularization 9. Type 3 macular neovascularization 10. Geographic atrophy 11. Therapy in AMD 12. The employment of artificial intelligence in AMD 13. AMD vs pachychoroid disease and other mimicking disorders

Professor Querques has contributed to more than 300 peer-reviewed articles published mainly in the areas of Medical Retina (age-related macular degeneration, retinal vascular diseases, hereditary retinal diseases, ophthalmic genetics). His current main area of both clinical and laboratory research is focusing on the diagnosis (imaging) and treatment of age-related macular degeneration, retinal vascular diseases, and hereditary retinal diseases. Professor Querques is a member of the Italian Society of Ophthalmology (SOI), the French Society of Ophthalmology (SFO), the European Association of Retinal Specialists (EURETINA), the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO), the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO), the Retina Society, the Club Jules Gonin, and the Macula Society. Enrico Borrelli, MD, graduated from Vita-Salute San Raffaele University (Milan, Italy) in 2013. He completed his residency in ophthalmology at Gabriele D’Annunzio University (Chieti, Italy) and his clinical research fellowship in medical retina and retinal imaging at Doheny Eye Institute, David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA (Los Angeles, CA, USA). Currently, he works as retina specialist at San Raffaele Hospital (Milan, Italy). His research interests include image analysis and ocular imaging (retinal and choroidal disorders), age-related macular degeneration (AMD), pachychoroid disease, and diabetic retinopathy. He has performed pioneering work in opening the field of color autofluorescence and in employing OCT angiography to detect changes in the choriocapillaris in AMD subjects. He has authored or co-authored over 160 articles in peer reviewed international journals. He has given a number of invited lectures at meetings.
