Review :
Advanced praise for Reading for Life   Focusing on careers is a great idea. It helps students to explore into different careers while developing their reading skills and strategies. In addition, students are exposed to common terms or jargon in different careers. -- Taddese Addo, Community College of Denver   The greatest strengths are the thematic career centered approach and the use of interesting readings related to the career theme. I think students would find this interesting and would thus be more engaged in reading the assignments. --Linda Saumell, Miami Dade College   I think the greatest strength is the theme of the text. Career exploration is such a relevant subject to this group of students, and it is more interesting than a lot of textbooks out there based on other subjects. My experience tells me:  the more practical the better and I see this text as very practical. --Kimberly Jones, College of Southern Idaho   I love that the feature articles profile specific careers and inspirational stories of people realizing their dreams—this content should appeal to this type of student. --Kimberly Jones, College of Southern Idaho   For all of the chapters, I do like the focus on certain career themes for each chapter. I believe this will make interesting reading for students and can also help them identify careers in which they might be interested. I found the readings to be quite engaging and well chosen.  I found the readings to be quite engaging and well chosen. --Linda Saumell, Miami Dade College   On the Job Interview – I liked this, a real person with real problems, just like the students so a good opportunity to see someone prevail over challenges to reach a goal. Also provides good day to day information about a career. --Linda Saumell, Miami Dade College   The emphases on career exploration and the needs of adjunct professors make this text stand out.  “Focus on careers”—this is an excellent feature, better than my current text, and the practice from criminal justice textbooks will hold student interest.  There’s a good range of careers. --Mary Nielsen, Dalton State College   The themed approach with career explorations is right on target. It has been my experience that the more students can interact with the text, classmates, instructors while connecting it all to real world experiences, comprehension happens! --Phebe Simmons, Blinn College   I especially value the reading selections that feature real people.  I agree with the author’s assessment that students often lack goals and/or direction.  This focus gives us a leg-up on that arena and something to talk to students about planning and goal setting. -- Alan Shuttleworth, Sierra College   “Applying the Skills”—I really like this section because it helps students to make the connection between what they are learning in this class, and how it will help them in their other classes or in life. // An obvious strength is the sense of audience awareness that this author portrays. From the choice of readings/authors, to the types of exercises, this textbook seems to be one that will appeal to the average reading student. This might be, in part, because it’s a subject that is “real life.” Many of these developmental students are so deeply imbedded in “real life” issues, that they have trouble understanding the academic scholar who is analyzing the underlying themes of a classic piece. --Kimberly Jones, College of Southern Idaho   The constant opportunity within reading selections to apply skills is pure genius. I found myself smiling more and more as I read through each page of the chapters because I felt for the first time someone really “gets it.” --Phebe Simmons, Blinn College
