About the Book

A vivid portrait of the English singer-songwriter and musician Nick Drake. Nicholas Rodney "Nick" Drake was an English singer-songwriter and musician, known for his acoustic guitar-based songs. Drake released only three complete albums -- Five Leaves Left (1969), Bryter Layter (1970), Pink Moon (1972) -- and was not well known before his death in 1974. Yet he gained a massive posthumous following, inspiring leading musicians such as R.E.M.'s Peter Buck and Robert Smith of The Cure and bands such as Coldplay and The Black Crowes. Forty years after Nick's death, Remembered for a While peels back some of the mystery surrounding his life. This book features gorgeous color photographs, as well as original letters and interviews with family and friends. As Nick's sister writes in the introduction, Remembered for a While reveals "the poet, the musician, the friend, the son, the brother, who was also more than all of these together, and as indefinable as the morning mist." At long last, Remembered for a While paints a portrait of a visionary musician who inspired a fanatical following and whose legacy continues to inspire future generations of musicians -- and the lives of his fans.

Review :
"A sumptuous volume comprising family photographs, musical analysis of his songs, essays by Gabrielle [Drake] about her family's history in colonial Burma, where Nick was born in 1948, and tributes from friends and kindred spirits...It's a beautiful book."--Stuart Jeffries, The Guardian "Drake's ever-growing legion of hipster rock fans will be fascinated by this coffee-table book featuring family photos, tributes and even passages from Drake's diary."--The Minneapolis Star Tribune "Lovingly compiled...This compendium of letters, photographs, handwritten poetry, and personal ephemera builds an intimate picture of an immensely talented yet tormented artist."--Aimee Farrell, Vogue "Man, musician and legacy are each beautifully served by REMEMBERED FOR A WHILE...There is unlikely to be another volume compiled which will have the same privilege of access to so many of the key-players in the Drake story, nor to the family's archive; and, therefore, nor will there be another which conveys as much detail or is produced with such care...Sometimes painfully honest, often emotional, occasionally funny, sometimes dry and scholarly - always deeply engaging - REMEMBERED FOR A WHILE is probably the most ambitious, generous and thorough volume about a musician to see publication. Put simply, this is the authoritative resource for fans and future historians who may find themselves considering Nick Drake. In its absolute integrity and its sheer dignity, it is second only to his music."--The Mouth Magazine "Some of the mystery around Drake may fall away with the publication of Remembered for a While, a 450-page compilation of essays and memorabilia edited by Gabrielle Drake, the singer's sister, and Cally Callomon, the manager of his musical estate...And though Ms. Drake writes that Remembered for a While is not a biography, her astute annotations, as well as the album-by-album overview by the British critic Peter Paphides, make it a richly detailed account of his life and work."--Allan Kozinn, New York Times "When you put all of the puzzle pieces of this book together, one is left with the most hi-res portrait of Nick Drake to date, and one that might actually be more satisfying and resonant than any straight-up bio."--Boing Boing
