About the Book

This study examines an often-overlooked aspect of the social history of the Civil War: labor from 1860 to 1865, in both the North and the South, covering men and women, agrarian and industrialized, enslaved and free. The Civil War tested Americans not only on battlefields, but also in fields and factories across the divided nation. Men, women, and children—black and white, immigrant and native-born, North and South (and West)—toiled long days to meet the wartime demands for munitions, uniforms, and other key materiel. The Civil War caused great socio-economic upheaval beyond the titanic clash of armies and resulting bloodshed. In this work, scholars present rich local portraits and case studies of workers' lives and labor in the cauldron of political secession and civil insurrection, enabling readers to grasp the dramatic transformation of work and working-class life that resulted from the Civic War. This book presents the first synthetic survey of the wealth of recent scholarship and key primary sources in order to explore a series of crucial questions surrounding workers' experiences in the Civil War. How did workers approach growing threats of secession in the winter of 1860–1861? How was work itself, as well as working-class life and politics, shaped by the demands of wartime production? How did the factors of race, gender, age, skill, ethnicity, and regional identity affect the wartime experience of American workers? Were wartime changes in response to the crisis of war temporary, or did they result in permanent transformations of the American economy and social structure? • Supplies a labor history of the Civil War appropriate for general audiences as well as students researching American labor or history • Explores the working lives of men and women, free and enslaved, before the coming of the Civil War, in the midst of wartime, and the months after the war's conclusion • Provides broad geographic coverage across the North and South • Presents a broad narrative that conveys general themes about social, economic, and technological change

A Thrilling But Totally Believable Murder Mystery

Read this in one evening. I had planned to do other things with my day, but it was impossible to put down. Every time I tried, I was drawn back to it in less than 5 minutes. I sobbed my eyes out the entire last 100 pages. Highly recommend!
