About the Author :
PATRICK LEBEAU is Professor of Writing, Rhetoric, and American Cultures at Michigan State University. He is the author of Rethinking Michigan Indian History (2005). He is also a member of the Cheyenne River Sioux Indian Reservation of South Dakota.

Review :
. . . achieves its aim of providing key jumping off spots in the complex tangle of different American Indian tribal history narratives. LeBeau (writing, rhetoric and American cultures, Michigan State U.) supplies students with 100 term paper subjects on American Indian history by using a chronological structure to detail events from the first outbreaks of smallpox in the 16th century to the Native American Language Act of 1990. Each entry contains a brief summary of the topic, specific suggestions for the focus of each paper and primary and secondary resources for further research. Additional Internet and multimedia resources are also provided in separate sections. This volume fits its purpose as stated in the preface. Rather than serving as a major resource for the serious scholar, it will be a useful work for high school, undergraduate, and public libraries. Helpful index. Summing Up: Recommended. Lower-level undergraduates and general readers. Students, teachers, and librarians who are interested in Native American history will benefit from consulting this tool. In an era of shrinking library materials budgets, research paper guides that help students frame their topics and point them in the direction of relevant resources may not be essential purchases.
