About the Book

A very thorough guide to the fantasies and fantasists selected, this is unlike any other guide to the genre. . . . Only English and Amerian authors of full-length fantasies are included, just 36, with entries for titles, characters, places, and magical objects, and of course the authors. Authors' entries describe major themes of all their full-length works, following biographical notes. Book-title entries give plot synopses and information about the first editions of the books. . . . People who remember something of a fantasy sequence and want to find it again will find this the most helpful guide to fantasies yet to appear. Choice

Review :
"A Reference Guide to Modern Fantasy for Children is easy to use in its dictionary format. There are entries for 36 major 19th- and 20th-century British and American authors. Each author entry includes a short biography and a synopsis of the major themes of their full-length fantasy works; there is also a bibliography of the author's works as well as secondary works. Collectors will be pleased to find first edition information and, whenever relevant, details on reprints or revisions. There are also full entries by book title, characters, places and magical objects that appear in the books. There is extensive cross referencing with asterisks to indicate separate entries. Three Appendixes include Works About Fantasy, ' a Chronology' from Charles Kingsley's birth in 1819 to the publication of The Borrowers Avenged in 1982. A thorough index completes the volume. ... [For] the student of fantasy literature for children, this is a valuable, conveniently organized reference. Librarians and specialists in other children's literature will also find it helpful."-AB Bookman's Weekly ?A very thorough guide to the fantasies and fantasists selected, this is unlike any other guide to the genre. ...
