Review :
Librarians looking to help patrons find fiction will get a boost from this new work. . . . As a whole, this work should be a boon to reader's advisory and collection development librarians needing to build specific areas of the collection. Recommended for public libraries and academic libraries supporting relevant programming. Adamson's two volumes provide coverage of more titles, based in part on a more flexible definition of 'historical fiction', which allows her to include works such as Loren D. Estleman's Motown, set in 1966. Her young adult designations are a useful feature, especially for students in the upper grades.Recommended for libraries that serve avid readers of historical fiction. "[I]t would be an injustice to characterize American Historical Fiction as merely a revision and update of Dickinson's American Historical Fiction. It does include titles also listed in Dickinson's; but thereafter the similarities give way to the superiorities of the newer guide. . . . [T]hese new volumes will be useful reader's advisory and collection development guides to the past as portrayed in fiction. These books will be invaluable resources to English and history teachers - and their students - who are looking for novels that relate to specific regions of the world or historical periods. Both books are logically organized and readable: even novice researchers will have little dificulty tracking down suitable historical titles. . . . [T]wo impressive works.
