About the Book

By definition, antipodes are points of the earth diametrically opposite from one another. As a field biologist specializing in herpetology (the study of snakes, lizards, and other creepy things), Heather Heying has been to some of the most remote, creature-infested places on the globe. But nothing she previously experienced quite prepared her for the three seasons of research she spent studying tiny, bright, poisonous frogs on the island of Madagascar. Because of its eons-old isolation, Madagascar has the distinction of being an evolutionary wonder. It's home to an incredible number of different species in a surprisingly small radius. On top of that, approximately 97% of the wildlife of Magascar is endemic -- found nowhere else in the world. This makes it a biologist's paradise. However, this also means that Madagascar is cut off from what we know as normal existance, and is laps behind the first world. Time means nothing there. A person's net worth hinges on how many pots of rice a day they get to eat, or how many yards of rope they have. Language and culture barriers, combined with bureaucratic red tape, can also make it a biologist's worst nightmare. In stories that are often hilarious, informative, moving, insightful, and beautiful, Heather recounts her experiences at the antipode of our world -- from run-ins with naked sailors and unusually hostile lemurs to tropical hurricanes and greedy tourist entrepreneurs. Throughout it all, her elusive subject, the poison frog, is observed candidly, illuminating an altogether different type of existence. Heather's tales evoke culture clash and culture shock, an evolution of perception as she begins to understand her role and placeas a white female Westerner in a very foreign society, and an intense love for and fascination with the unique wildlife that surrounds her there.
