About the Book

Change surrounds Navajo Police Special Investigator Ella Clah in her latest adventure. Hard times have fallen on the Navajo Reservation. The Dineh, eager to relieve their poverty, seem ready to bring casino gambling to the Rez, despite its potential for increasing crime and alcohol abuse, despite the risk that the character of the Navajo Nation will be forever altered. Ella's daughter, Dawn, is a feisty two-year-old, no longer a baby. Dawn's father, Kevin Tolino, seems torn between his duties as a father and as a member of the tribal council. Ella's brother, Clifford, is deeply involved in raising his niece, to the displeasure of his wife, who feels he is neglecting his son. But the biggest changes are in Ella's mother. Taking care of her granddaughter and looking after her headstrong, wayward children no longer satisfy Rose Destea. She had a personal and political life before marriage and children, and in Changing Woman readers see Rose's passions on the rise. Speaking out against gambling, Rose becomes first a local, then a national celebrity, valued for her clear judgment on a complex issue. Romance blossoms between Rose and an old friend. Ella has no time to consider how these changes in Rose will affect the whole family. Ella and the rest of the Navajo police force are combating an increasingly dangerous wave of vandalism. Handicapped by outdated equipment and a shortage of officers on patrol, they are always two steps behind the perpetrators. Events come to a head with the takeover of a coal mine and power plant on the Reservation. Ella infiltrates the terrorist operation, but her investigation is cut short by the news that Dawn and Kevin have disappeared undersuspicious circumstances. Ella's fellow officers across the West rally around one of their own, determined to find Ella's child and bring her home safe. Jacket art by William Villarreal
