About the Book

In 1994, Bill Hybels' groundbreaking book, "Becoming a Contagious Christian", revolutionized the way Christians understood and practiced evangelism. "Contagious" took the intimidation factor out of evangelism by giving believers permission to be themselves, and by showing them how to use their own evangelism styles to build relationships with seekers. The good news is that over a million people have been trained in "Contagious'" practical, relational approach. The bad news is that, though they now have the basic skills they need to tell others about Christ, most Christians rarely spend time with people who are far from God. Believers universally affirm that evangelism is a vital part of what God calls them to do, but very few make a practice of doing it. They feel awkward and ill-equipped, either because they've never been trained, or because their lack of interaction with non-Christians prevents them from using and developing the skills they do have. Now, after more than ten years of ongoing ministry and personal reflection, Bill Hybels addresses these concerns and signals the next era in personal evangelism with "Just Walk Across the Room". Drawing on fresh perspectives from the author's own experiences, as well as time-tested and practical illustrations, "Just Walk Across the Room" encourages and equips readers to routinely initiate spiritual conversations with those who don't know Christ. The author takes the guesswork out of evangelism by showing Christians how to "walk across the room" - be intentional in their everyday contacts with people - to reach seekers with the transformational message of Christ. Hybels encourages readers to follow a simple, "Three-D" approach: Decide to Wonder - about people's needs, paths to fulfillment, and eternal destinies; Discover Their Story - then share your own before-and-after story, followed by God's redemptive story; and Discern Next Steps - by relying on the Holy Spirit to help determine what the other person needs. Written to encourage and motivate as well as to equip, the book features: inspiring true stories that show the potent Three-D principles in action; cogent teaching points that provide a fresh perspective; how-to sidebars that offer practical tips; and personal reflection and application questions that help readers take action on what they have learned. The author's central, empowering message is this: Believers may be only a conversation away from having an eternal impact on someone's life - if they will Just Walk Across the Room.
