About the Book

A major challenge faced by managers in the 1990s is to combine the twin objectives of developing employee involvement and motivation at work (in the interests of better quality, high productivity and customer service) and implementing new technology and computer systems. This text explores the impact of new technology on people and their jobs and how, through the use of job design and work organizational concepts, it is possible to achieve a match between human and technological needs. The use and analysis of case studies in the book suggests that new technology may call for new forms of management and organizations, if we are to maintain the involvement of people in a technological age. The implications for managers introducing IT in terms of attitudes, assumptions, management and organizational structure are illustrated and explored. The book examines how to implement the efficiencies and cost savings of IT while maintaining employee interest and motivation. It contains three major case studies to explore the practical applications. This text is suitable for undergraduates and graduates studying a range of subjects including organizational behaviour, business information systems, computing and engineering.
