About the Book

This text aims to provide a basis for developing computer-based tools for the analysis and design of technological systems. A practical perspective is taken by using an electronic system to illustrate how the various techniques can be integrated together to obtain an environment which makes systems analysis and design easier. In the course of the discussion, requirements for interactive systems and computer-based presentation of information are provided and an outline of the software techniques necessary to meet these requirements is given.

Table of Contents:
Part 1 Background - the need for interactive descriptions of systems: technological systems; human shortcomings in dealing with technological systems; the need for structured and multifaceted descriptions on a computer; designing computers for the user; representing the dynamics of continuous systems; an interactive environment for symbolic simulation of continuous dynamic systems. Part 2 Multifaceted structures for system descriptions: systems design using multiple scenarios; an example of a multifaceted dynamic system scenario; an object-based structure for systems; descriptive techniques; graphical representation of the physical structure; qualitative features and logical connectivity; quantitative relationships and algebra; difficulties with using conventional representations. Part 3 Computer-based representation of systems: software for system simulation; limitations of traditional software; functionality requirements for interactive and exploratory computer-based system descriptions. Part 4 Software requirements and features of LISP, KEE and MACSYMA: outline of requirements; extensible software; support for integrating multiple programming techniques; LISP and related support platforms; programming paradigms, interactive facilities and their illustration in KEE; the computer algebra system MACSYMA. Part 5 The practical implementation of an interactive environment for dynamic systems: mapping the problem structure onto an interactive architecture; representation of the system - descriptions using KEE's object-oriented features; using KEEpictures for the interactive presentation; procedures, constraints and rules for generating descriptive details; a worked example - representation of a biquad bandpass filter; representation of simple non-linear systems; library modules; support for multiple scenarios. Part 6 Summary of practical work: key features of the demonstration environment; the implementation tools and techniques; computer algebra; multiple scenarios; shortcomings of the demonstration environment. Part 7 Conclusion and future work - the application of symbolic techniques: visible and interactive rather than ill-structured situations; continuous and non-continuous systems; implementation considerations; future work; the computer as a tool.
