About the Book

Popular mythology about implementations of lazy functional languages is that they are slow when compared with more traditional languages such as C and Pascal. Early implementations were slow, for two reasons. Firstly, they were largely interpretive. Compiler technology has advanced sufficiently now that programs run respectably fast when compared with those written in more traditional languages. Secondly, the semantics of such languages requires that arguments to functions are not evaluation until their values are needed, imposing time and memory overheads, and restricting any parallelism in an implementation. This book describes a more efficient implementation model that can be used when information is known about how functions use their arguments, develops a semantically sound analysis technique, abstract interpretation, which can determine this information, and shows how to use the information to compile more efficient code for sequential and parallel machines. The book should be useful for those interested in the semantic foundations of implementations of lazy functional languages.

Table of Contents:
Part 1 Operational and denotational semantics of the typed Lambda Calculus: the typed Lambda-Calculus; sets with structure; interpretations; a result relating the operational semantics and standard interpretation of Lambda typed. Part 2 A framework for the abstract interpretation of functional languages: the abstraction interpretation of Lambda typed; abstraction and concretization maps; correctness of the abstract interpretation. Part 3 An abstract interpretation for evaluation transformers: the abstract interpretation of booleans, integers, lists and trees; the abstract interpretation of functional constants; some examples of the abstract interpretation of user-defined functions; on defining abstract domains; a systematic approach to deriving abstract domains for lists and trees. Part 4 Evaluation transformers: safe changes to the evaluation strategy; definition of evaluators; determing evalutation tranformers. Part 5 Implementing functional languages on sequential and parallel machines: graph reduction; the spineless G-machine; relating the graph reduction model to the typed Lambda Calculus; compiling code for evaluation transformers. Part 6 Relationship to other work.
