About the Book

Developments within the computer industry over recent years have led to computerisation becoming a practical prospect for any business whatever its size. This book is not intended to be a computer book for business people but rather a business book about computers. It attempts to present the alternatives available and to guide you, the businessman or woman as you may be contemplating either the introduction of a computer system into your business for the first time or improve the computing power available in your business. It is the author's belief through practice and experience that business people should not have to become computer experts in order to derive significant benefits from the introduction and use of computers. It should merely be necessary for them to understand the potential of the technology and know how to drive it. As a result, this book concentrates on matters of practice relevant to the non-technical business person. It aims to provide a step by step guide from making the decision that computerisation is worth investigating; through deciding what to buy; buying a system; getting it installed and working; to managing the system thereafter. In order to assist you in being able to place much of the material into some more understandable context, the book uses a number of case studies and highlights some of the principle obstacles encountered by businesses when introducing computer based systems. However, it is necessary to explain to some degree the technology itself. Some understanding is necessary in order to run a system, as well as to be able to read with computer sales people; several more technical chapters in this book will help you with that understanding. A list of key computer terms is included in the appendices.

Table of Contents:
Part 1 Making a sound start: the decision to computerise; the technology of microcomputers; some business applications; getting started with your computer. Part 2 Acquiring and implementing a computer system: initial costs of computerisation; your first steps to computerisation; case study - Natwest Light Ltd; more on costs of computerising. Part 3 Installing and running a computer system: practical aspects of installing a computer; staff training; implementing an applications package; a further case study. Part 4 The next steps: looking after your system; extending the system; when things go wrong; a final case study. Appendices: a glossary of computing terms; an outline of the data protection act; sources of information; a brief guide to suing MSDOS; details that might appear on a tender document.
