About the Book

The book is intended as a primer to those data-processing professionals who wish to embark on a career in database processing, and it aims to provide a comprehensive treatment of principles and practice of databases at a level suitable for such experienced newcomers. The subject is covered as a series of topics, each to a chapter and each written by a specialist in that topic. In addition the chapters are largely self-contained, and therefore can be read in isolation. The contributors to this book come from both academia and industry, and most of them have experience of teaching databases both at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The book begins with a general introduction which includes a background to databases developments, an outline of the book, and some examples to be used throughout the book. Chapter 1 concentrates on the first-level issues, such as architecture, data independence, data representation and data model issues, while chapter 2 focuses on the second-level issues such as concurrency, recovery and operational concepts. Two popular data models, relational and network, are presented in chapters 3 and 4 respectively. A topical issue is user-interfaces which is becoming increasingly important for database practitioners and the authors have devoted a whole chapter to it, which includes a discussion on fourth generation languages. The storage issues are reviewed in chapter 6 for those who would like to know more about efficient database design. The authors have then described two products: DB2 as an example of a relational implementation, and IDMS as an example of a network implementation. Many relational implementations, such as ORACLE, are based on concepts similar to those used in DB2. The next three chapters, 8-10, deal with the operational issues a database practitioner is likely to encounter - product evaluation, database design and database implementation. Product evaluation reviews the techniques available for the selection of database products, while in database design the focus is on the design techniques for efficient performance. The chapter on implementation covers issues such as database systems life cycles.
