Mais Louis XIV, que diri geaient les Jésuites, voulut étendre son despotisme jusque sur les croyances de ses sujets catholiques. Il voulut, de concert avec Rome, leur imposer les. Doctrines ultramontaines, confie lesquelles la France n'avait cessé de s'élever dans tout le cours de son histoire. Il provoqua une agitation que son autorité eut peine à' contenir. Sous le minis tère du cardinal de F leury, cette alliance de la royauté et du Saint - Siége se resserra davantage et tous les moyensd'un gouvernement arbitraire furent mis en oeuvre pour substituer les théories romaines aux doctrines gallicanes qui étaient celles de la majorité du pays.[le mécontente ment gagna le bas clergé, la magistrature la bourgeoisie, le peupleäde religieuse qu'elle était l'opposition devint politique. Lorsque Louis XV, après la mort du cardinal de Fleury, se saisit des rènes du pouvoir, on espéra un moment que les choses allaient suivre un autre cours; mais la mollesse du monarque laissa le parti ultramontain reprendre son empire et le haut clergé se livrer à des excès qui soulevèrent de plus violents orages. Vainement le gouvernement se décida-t-il à frapper les plus ardents promoteurs des idées ultramontaines. La suppression des Jésuites en 1762 satisfit aux voeux du pays, sans remé dier au mal.
