Si l'on en croit Arnoul Wion la dénomination de Solitaire qu'il porte doit s'exphquer par celle de lloine, d'ou cet écrivain conclut qu'il était bénédictin. C'est une conjecture que rien n'oblige d'admettre ni de rejeter. Il n'en est pas de mème des récits d'autres historiens modernes dont les uns placent HO nore sur la chaire episc0pale d'autnn, les autres racontent que, cette chaire lui ayant été Ofierte, il la re fusa pour suivre le roi Louis le Jeune à la croisade. Ces anecdotes, visiblement enfantées par I'imagina tion, ne méritent pas que la critique se mette en frais pour les réfuter. L'opinion singulière de M le Beuf sur la patrie d'honoré, sans etre plus vraie, demande un peu de considération. Ce savant, dans une de ses dissertations entreprend d'enlever cet écrivain non - seulement à i'eglise d'autun, mais a la France, pour faire honneur de sa naissance à l'allemagne. Voici les raisons dont il étaye ce paradoxe historique. D'ebord il soutient que le surnom d'augustodinensis, par lequel on distingue celui qui nous occupo, des autres de méme nom, a fait illusion en deux manières 1° dit-il, personne avant Trithème ne l'a qualifié de la sorte. Cependant il convient que cette dénomination se trouve à la fin d'un ouvrage d'honoré meme. C'est son traité Des auteurs ecclésiastiques, dont le dernier article porte Honorius Au gustodunensis Ecclesia: presbyter non spernenda opuscula edidit. Mais cet endroit n'embarrasse point le dissertateur, parce qu'il le regarde comme une addition faite par une main étrangère. La preuve de cette assertion, qu'il se contente de mettre en avant, m'enrait pas été de trop. Supposons néanmoins l'addition rèelle du moins faut il convenir qu'elle précède de beaucoup I'àge de Trithème, puisque tous les manus crits sur lesquels ont été faites les différentes éditions de ce traité, la renl'ermaient. Il y plus Honoré porte ce meme surnom dans plusieurs manuscrits à la téte des productions de sa plume. Nous indique roms spécialement celui de la bibliothèque du Roi, coté n° 999, dont l'écriture appartient au XIII° siècle. On y trouve son traité De la perle de l'dme avec ce titre qui est du meme temps Honorii Augustodu-nensis Gemma animes; 2° M. Le Beni prétend qu'en admettant la dénomination contestée, elle ne doit point s'en [andre dela ville d'autun, mais ou d'augt près de Bale, ou d'ausbourg, capitale de la Souabe. Il n'a point, à la vérité, rencontré de monument Où le terme Augeistodunensis fùt employé pour designer un ci toyen de cette dernière ville; mais il a trouvé u'au VIII° siècle un eveque d'augt s'était dit Episc0pus Ecclesiae Augustodunensis; découverte qui le ait pencher a placer Honoré dans cette ville préiérablement aux deux autres.
