About the Book

This richly illustrated collection profiles the bold innovators in landscape architecture who, around the turn of the twentieth century, ventured into the nation's heartland to develop a new style of design celebrating the native midwestern landscape. The pioneers of landscape architecture in the Midwest are responsible for creating some of the most recognizable parks, cemeteries, recreation areas, and other public gathering places in the region. "Midwestern Landscape Architecture" includes essays on Adolph Strauch, who introduced a new concept of visually integrated landscape treatment in Cincinnati's Spring Grove Cemetery; William Le Baron Jenney, designer of Chicago's diverse West Parks; and Jens Jensen, who created the American Garden in Union Park in Chicago (a celebration of native flora) and founder of The Clearing, a unique school of the arts and humanities in Wisconsin. Other major figures include Frederick Law Olmsted Sr., co-designer of New York's Central Park, whose work in the Midwest included the layout of the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition, and Ossian Cole Simonds, who helped reconcile the formal approach of the City Beautiful movement with the naturalism of the Prairie School in urban park design. This volume also details the contributions of crusaders for ecological awareness and an appreciation of the region's natural heritage. These include horticultural writer Wilhelm Miller, who spread the ideals of the Prairie style, and Genevieve Gillette, a landscape architect and conservationist whose preservation efforts led to the establishment of numerous Michigan state parks and wilderness areas. "Midwestern Landscape Architecture" fosters a better understanding of how landscape design took shape in the Midwest and how the land itself inspired new solutions to enhance its understated beauty. Despite Olmsted's assessment of the Illinois prairie as "one of the most tiresome landscapes that I ever met with," the Midwest has amassed an important legacy of landscape design that continues to influence how people interact with their environment in the heartland.

Review :
"Miller ... looms large in this collection of 13 biographical essays contributed by highly regarded scholars and practitioners, as do Simonds and Jeans Jensen, the triumvirate most closely identified with the Prairie School... [Essays] document the careers of landscape architects who strove to achieve a regionalist expression in their designs and worked to protect the natural heritage of the upper midwest. A well conceived and handsomely produced book." -- Choice "Well-written essays about some difficult-to-research individuals. By giving voice to their unsung roles in our social and cultural history, this book makes their stories accessible to the wide audience they deserve... With his love for and experience with designed landscapes in the Midwest, William H. Tishler made an ideal editor for this work." -- Barbara Geiger, Illinois Heritage "The impact of these professionals is staggering. They provided innovative ideas in the design of cemeteries, parks, playgrounds, parkways, and park systems (for cities, regions, and states), residential subdivisions, and residential gardens. This book promotes interest in the protection of regional landscapes and opens the door for further research." -- Anne Hoover, Indiana Magazine of History "Brings together research by some of the nation's top landscape scholars. Most are meticulously researched and well illustrated with historic plans and photographs, reflecting not only their authors' understanding of the principles of landscape design but also an endearing appreciation of the inherent beauty and cultural heritage of the central United States." -- Linda Flint McClelland, Wisconsin Magazine of History "Written by a talented cast of landscape scholars, the chapters are well researched, well documented, and well written. Highly readable, [this volume] will be a useful reference for students and ... future researchers... For landscape architectural history buffs, the book is a veritable feast. New facts about little know designs and designers are illuminated on almost every page." -- Heide Hohmann, Landscape Journal "Expertly written and extremely well illustrated and referenced, each essay is an informative story in its own right... Readers might study this book before visiting the cities of the Midwest... Many would say that the landscapes of the region do not distinguish themselves by visual or extreme drama; however, they have often served to inspire a distinctive design response." -- Malcolm Cairns, Land Forum "Affords an unusual, often overlooked perspective on landscape design ... reflecting the unique physical and cultural context of prairie landscapes and the communities that emerged here." -- Steve Martens,North Dakota History ADVANCE PRAISE "Tishler has done a tremendous service to his profession and to the general public by assembling many of the best landscape historians in North America as contributors to Midwestern Landscape Architecture. They make history come to life and give personal and historical substance lives to issues that are usually presented only as outlines or lists of chronological facts. This is an excellent text for young, up-and-coming landscape architects." -- Robert Scarfo, Washington State University
