Excerpt from D'Un Siècle A l'Autre: Chronique d'une Génération (1885-1920) Mon enfance m'apparaît comme un jardin plein de fleurs et de lumière. J'ai su que j'ai partagé, pendant dix ans, la vie simple et laborieuse de ceux qui m'ont élevé, et vous verrez que les miens écartaient toute mollesse de l'éducation et ne pra tiquaient pas l'indulgence devant les fautes del'en fanee. Quandje rassemble mes souvenirs, je compte peu d'heures données au jeu, beaucoup au travail, et je comprends qu'une partie de mes efforts était nécessaire pour équilibrer l'existence étroite de mes grands - parents je vois aussi queje vivais, seul enfant, auprès de deux vieillards sévères, qui ne voyaient guère que de vieilles gens, dans un bourg où ne régnait pas ce que l'on a nommé depuis la joie de vivre. Avec ces souvenirs, il semble que l'on puisse composer le tableau d'une sombre enfance victime des préjugés de la petite bourgeoisie d'une toute petite ville de province. Et l'on opposerait à ce tableau celui d'une jeunesse libérée par l'art, la Science et la Liberté. Ce serait conforme à la pen sée qui s'est efiorcée pendant un siècle à déformer les réalités. Cent écrivains du siècle dernier ont copié les Mémoires d'outre-tombe afin de faire, de la ferme, de l'atelier ou de la maison bourgeoise où ils sont nés, un petit Combourg d'où leur âme altière s'élancait vers la vie malgré les con traintes et les préjugés. Il est vrai que, adolescent, j'ai cru, comme tant d'autres, me libérer par les idées que glorifiaient les hommes de ma génération. C'était l'époque heureuse de mes vingt ans, où pendant quelques années mon enfance m'apparut comme entourée d'erreurs. Mais la vérité est que ma jeunesse fut assom brie, et demeure telle dans mon souvenir, par l'anarchie intellectuelle du siècle dernier. Ma véri table libération date du jour où je retrouvai, ins crites dans mon esprit et dans ma chair, les vivantes vérités que m'avaient transmises les miens. Alors, je reprends possession de moi - même, j'ouvre le livre de mon enfance, et ses pages lumineuses me disent mon destin et le sens de la vie. C'est dans l'ombre légère des lauriers-roses, au seuil du jardin oùj'entendais les récits de ma grand'mere.
