About the Book

One hundred years after Ireland's 1916 Rising, the revolt that ultimately lead to independence, who are the Irish and what has become of the republic they made? After two decades of photographing people caught up in their own dreams and tragedies in places like Syria, Afghanistan and Iraq, Seamus Murphy, exile and escapee, returns to dig deep into the forces and mysteries that have driven - and sometimes beguiled - his own country since its birth. From Tuam to Tinahely, Ballycroy to Ballaghaderreen, Dublin to Ireland's wilder western shores, Murphy turns his eye on the country he still considers a home. Affectionate and wry, The Republic is an immediate and intensely personal portrait of a country.

About the Author :
Seamus Murphy grew up in Ireland and lives in London. The recipient of seven World Press Photo awards for his work in Ireland, the Middle East, Asia, Africa and Latin America, his photography from Afghanistan - begun in 1994 - won him the World Understanding Award. Considering photography as part history, part magic, he has worked with musician PJ Harvey and the New Yorker on film and photography projects, and is the author of two books.

Review :
I love everything about this book...its richness, depth and beauty. Most of all I love to be reminded of the power of Seamus's work. Again, I am speechless and happily lost in a journey through this fascinating and complex country Wonderful ... Murphy has an extraordinary eye for capturing humanity Terrific ... An extraordinary work that captures the strange and the familiar about this mad little island Murphy's Ireland is both a strange and familiar place and it unfolds in a wilfully impressionistic fashion ... Another Ireland is evoked, a still tentative place edging its way towards an uncertain future once again There is nothing superficial about these images; they go to the very heart of things. Filled with pain, unease and anguish, but also violence, enthusiasm and passion, Seamus Murphy's images just have to be seen
