About the Book

This invaluable resource contains all three reprinted volumes by W.S.F. Pickering, exploring the thought and writings of the great French sociologist Émile Durkheim: Durkheim's Sociology of Religion: Themes and Theories, Durkheim: Essays on Morals and Education and Durkheim on Religion: A Selection of Readings with Bibliographies and Introductory Remarks. Durkheim's Sociology of Religion: Themes and Theories explains Durkheim's views on religion as no other previous volume has done, using the whole corpus of his writings. Dr Pickering shows how Durkheim's position developed and explains the themes and theories that run through Durkheim's work. This includes Durkheim's attitude towards secularisation and Christian churches, as well as his notion of the contemporary cult of the individual. Durkheim: Essays on Morals and Education brings together many of Durkheim's writings on the subjects, translated into English for the first time. A wide selection of articles, reviews and discussions has been included for translation in this book, covering subjects, in morals, defining morals, the science of morality, moral facts, relativism, the relation of science to morality; and in education, problems of definition, childhood, sex education, Rousseau's Émile, teaching secular morality and the effectiveness of moral doctrines. The book also includes an introduction to each of the two sections, as well as extensive bibliographies. Durkheim on Religion is a selection of readings from Durkheim's writings on religion, presented in order of original publication, ranging from early reviews to articles and extracts from his books. Also included are detailed bibliographies and abstracts together with contributions by such writers as Van Gennep, Goldenweiser and Stanner. This collection will be invaluable to those studying sociology and anthropology, but will also be of interest to those studying the history or philosophy of religion, as well as to anyone with an interest in Durkheim and his intellectual legacy.

Review :
Essays on Morals and Education consists mostly of various articles written about one century ago by Émile Durkheim (1858-1917) and cleverly selected by W S F Pickering. Therefore, this is a book of vintage writings by Émile Durkheim, including 14 obscure articles, speeches, drafts, and book reviews first published in France in early 20th Century. Yves Laberge, Theological Book Review, volume 26, no 1, 2014 W.S.F. Pickering has made available to the English speaking-world Émile Durkheim's works in Morals and Education. As the title indicates, this book is not about Durkheim, but rather, Pickering brings together original texts translated by H. L. Sutcliffe. The structure of Pickering's book is of great value for research on Durkheim as well as moral philosophy and philosophy of education.[...]Pickering's edition is a valuable work in Durkheim scholarship because of the material that Pickering puts together in the two parts of the book, Education and Morals. The selected essays provide a broad perspective on Durkheim's thought. David Bellusci O.P., Science et Esprit 66/2, 2014
