The storm was raging, the wind almost took our breath away when we opened the door which led on to the terrace, while clouds of sand and dust were driven with violence against our faces. Amede'e, who now appeared in the light of a new character, that of a capricious laisser aller little Frenchwoman, seemed to be quite regardless of the weather; holding her shawl tightly round her, she tripped down the steps which led into the garden, and then, running across the sward, ascended those which ran up the side of the mountain. From time to time she turned round to see whether I was following her, and went off into fits of laughter when she saw the difficulty I found in getting over the huge clods of frozen earth. Quite out of breath, for my strength had not yet returned to me, I paused for a few minutes at the wicket-gate, which separated the terraces, and looked out on the extensive but dreary plain which lay to the left of the Castle, and over which the wind seemed resolved to wreak its fury, tearing up the weeds, and breaking the withered branches of the trees as if it meant to destroy everything. The view was, nevertheless, very imposing from this point; at my feet lay the old castle, with its grey turrets and walls, standing on a slight eminence like most feudal edifices of the olden time, while opposite rose mountain upon mountain, well-wooded almost up to the summits, which were now mostly hidden by the lowering clouds. My imagination drew many a vivid picture of the sieges the Castle had withstood; I saw troops drawn up in battle array on the weedy plain, their bright lances and white tents gleaming in the morning sun.
