Excerpt: ... An incident necessary to the elucidation of the mysterious circumstances of this story must now be explained. De Rouvigne was illegitimate son to the old Marquis de Courcy, and consequently brother to the murdered Marquis and the still more unfortunate Albert. His mother, a person of no inferior rank, but without fortune, had been seduced by the Marquis under a solemn promise of marriage when he should arrive at his twenty-fifth year, as the laws then existing in France prohibited his forming a legal union without the consent of his guardians, at an early period. Of this unfortunate connection De Rouvigne was the fruit. Though the. Marquis continued his attentions to his mother till the time appointed for the accomplishment of his vows, he then dishonourably refused to fulfil them. The credulous victim of his falsehood retired to a Convent, where the excess of htr affliction soon terminated its duration with that of her life. De Rouvigne, for so the ill-fated child was called, for some time experienced the blessings of paternal kindness; but when the Marquis married, his fondness for his bride and his legitimate offspring absorbed all the affection of which his nature was susceptible, and De Rouvigne was banished as a hateful object, whose presence perpetually recalled the painful remembrance of violated faith. To prevent the obtrusion of this disagreeable memento, the unfortunate youth was buried in that Italian Convent where, developed by the superior genius of Carlotti, his talents were employed in exploits of such eminent notoriety.
