I Yield the palm to none in my appreciation of what education can do for an individual, for a profession, and for a community, but in many .respects we are school mad. Every child needs as much as he can get of the knowledge of the world and of the wisdom of the ancients to help him to meet the issues of life, but he needs also personal touch and experience with the world of to-day, that he may know how to meet and to deal with the world of to-morrow when he will be a man with maximum responsibilities. I have said that in our thirst for information we have become school mad. I say it because we undertake to absorb practically every moment of the time of the child in his academic work, most of it with books dealing either with ancient affairs or with abstract information which, good though it is, cannot constitute a sufficient preparation for a life in the present and with the concrete. When the high school girl must choose between her music and her high school course, then something is wrong, and the evident remedy is to absorb less of her time in her studies, leaving time for music, or else to count the music as a part of her course. When she is so busy with her studies that she has no time to perform any part of the necessary labor of the home, then something is wrong, and the remedy isto require less of her time in the school, or else to take household affairs into the course.
