About the Book

This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1901. Excerpt: ... represented in fig. 11. Tt is no donbt thrown off together with the other parts of the preoral lobe. Besides, it is eqnally trne that the epistome can not be fonnd in the neighbonrhood of the larval month at snch a stage, while, on the other hand, in the worm after metamorphosis the rndimentary organ is seen as a small bnd on the dorsal median margin of the month. As before noted, the ring nerve of the adnlt is not yet formed in the swimming larva. This nerve and the so-called brain of the adnlt are of new formation; and the complicated nervons system which had developed only in the preoral lobe, snffers the same degeneration as that larval organ. In iig. CAc the ring nerve (r.n.)(r) is seen in section, jnst exterior to the septnm (mes.). It consists of a thick layer of very line nerve fibres. IV. Snpplementary Notes. J. Mullek (,46), the first discoverer of Actinotrocha, described the animal as an adnlt worm nnder the name Actinotrocha branchiata. The ventral ponch was considered by him to be the sexnal organ. Donbts were afterwards thrown on his views by Kroiin (.54); and they were finally refnted by Schneider (,62), who maintained that Actinotrocha is the larval form of a certain Gephyrea. This idea was continned by Kowalewsky (.67) who ascertained that Actinotrocha is the free swimming larva of Phoronis. Since this renowned discovery of Kowalewsky nnmerons papers on the anatomy and development of Phoronis have been pnblished by many celebrated natnralists. Bnt the singnlar fact is that the life history of the animal has not been snbjected Unhappily ihe leiier r id misprinied in ihe plaie as y. to a detailed stndy. The metamorphosis of Actinotrocha is, of conrse, one of the most cnrions phenomena in the animal ontogeny. Rnt the qnestion which inter.
