Excerpt from book: HOW EXPORT GOODS ARE HANDLED IN NEW YORK CITY It is well to remember at times that economic expansion, whether it be that of the nation, a city or a single enterprise, is often checked by purely physical limits. The adequacy of the plant to meet not only normal demands, but an occasional emergency, is one of the first requisites of successful planning. In the presence of unprecedented emergency the best thought out plans and devices may prove insufficient. Such is the experience thru which the transportation agencies are now going, and which is described in the present article. It presents a phase of our unusual export trade not treated in several articles dealing with other aspects of the trade movement, which were published in the Modern Business Supplement for 1915. The chapter on Export Traffic in the Modern Business Text on Traffic gives a general view of conditions in the foreign trade, of which the present article gives a specific illustration. The port of New York and its trade.?New York is the greatest seaport of the globe. Not only does the tonnage of the vessels entering and clearing from this port in foreign trade exceed that of any other of the world's ports, but its coastwise commerce also exceedsthat of any other port. If comparison be based on the tonnage and value of the merchandise handled, we also find New York surpassing all other ports. That New York is the greatest American port is familiar, but how far it exceeds other ports is scarcely realized. Before the war New York handled over 46 per cent of the total foreign trade of the United .States, and in the past year 54 per cent of our foreign commerce passed thru this port. The appended table shows that the trade of New York has recently grown out of proportion to that of the rest of the United States...
