Excerpt from book: SPEY FLIES AND WADING GEAR. Nee minus atque alios fallet tibi daxlala musca Artifici distincta manu plumaque teuella Consita. James Parke (Lord Wensleydale), Cambridge Tripos Venes, 1802. The golden period of sport for the angler on this portion of the Spey is from the 26th of August to the 15th of October. The pools during the early part of September generally contain a fair supply of newly-run salmon and grilse, although the dry weather which prevails at this time of year on the Morayshire coast seldom fails to affect the depth of the water injuriously, and to confine the fish too much to their respective quarters, until the first welcome autumnal spate sets them free. The tenants of the lower pools then move higher up the river, and shoals of fine salmon that have long been congregating outside the estuary, andanxiously watching an opportunity of quitting the sea, now cross the bar and occupy all the favourite haunts in considerable numbers. When the river has settled down after a real effective flood of this sort during September, good sport may be anticipated until the end of the season, and a second spate is rather to be deprecated than desired; for although it never fails to bring up fresh recruits from the sea, yet the same instinct that prompts these to enter the river equally induces those it already contains to move higher up the stream, and during their change of quarters success is out of the question, for a travelling fish never takes the fly. It is a fact that this portion of the Spey?the last ten or twelve miles of its course?affording such good sport during the autumn, is totally unproductive to the angler when the river opens again in the spring, and ...
