After General Lee had been degraded in the American service, and he had turned his back on this country, and could command from it no part of his fortune to transplant himself to any other part of the world, he could no venture, while living, to abuse the American character equal to his opinion of its deserts. He therefore knowing thit his will must be proved in that country, bequeathed a number of small legacies to his best friends in America, and bestowed the following clause on the rest of the American fraternity. I desire most earnestly that I may not be buried in any church or church-yard, or within a mile of a ly prcsbyterian or anababtist meeting house; for since I have resided in this cou itry I have kept so nuch bad co.npany w;ien living that I do not wish to continue it when dead.
