Excerpt from book: of the Sun at noon or mid-day at every place. Do we change our meridian by travelling ? No; only our Zenith. What is the Zenith ? The highest point in the Heavens directly over our heads, and the point opposite under us, is called the Nadir. LESSON THIRD. What sciences are intimately connected with the study of astronomy? Optics, Geometry, and the laws of Gravity. Of what does Optics treat ? Optics, from a Greek word signifying to see, is that branch of knowledge which treats of light and of vision as performed by the human eye. What is the use of the eye ? To convey to our minds an idea of visible objects. What is the form of the eye t Spherical, with a slight projection in front. What is its construction ? The ball of the eye consists of four coats or membranes, which have received the names of the sclerotic coat, the choroid coat, the cornea, and the retina. What is enclosed in these coats? Three humours, ?the aqueous, the vitreous, and the crystalline?the lastof which has the form of a lens. Describe the different coats. The sclerotic or outer coat, is a strong tough membrane, to which are attached all the muscles that give motion to the eye ball, and constitutes the white of the eye. What is the cornea ? The clear and transparent coat, which forms the front of the eye ball, and is the first op tical surface by which the rays of light are refracted. It is firmly united to the sclerotic coat, filling up as it were a circular aperture in front. What is the choroid coat ? The choroid coat is a delicate membrane lining the inner surface of the sclerotic coat, ?and is covered on its inner surface with a black pigment, and immediately within the pigment lies the retina. What is the retina? It is the innermost coat of all, ?a delicate reticulated membrane, formed by the expansion
