Amongst the various callings of life, there .is none perhaps which so prepares a man to take an accurate and comprehensive estimate of the sufferings of poverty, and the condition of the millions who toil for daily bread, as the profession of a medical man. He, if any one, bridges over the gulf which separates the Two Nations, rich and poor; for, whilst he belongs to the rich by education and habits, he has something of a direct interest in the poor, of whom he is not merely the patron, but in some measure the servant. Some know the hardships of the poor by actual participation, and to these the lowness of their standing point proves a disadvantage; others know them by reading of them, or hearing of them, or by occasionally, and as a matter of humanity, inquiring into them, and these view them from too high an elevation. But the medical man is, to speak in mesmeric dialect, placed en rapport with them throughout his life, and that at times and under circumstances which elicit the fullest confidence. He is obliged to learn his profession by listening to their tales of suffering in the consulting-room of dispensaries, or by assiduously watching at the bed-side of the destitute sufferer in the wards of hospitals. He there discerps the close, the all- but-inevitable connexion between destitution and disease, between starvation and sin. He sees the poor artisan, whom the want of fresh air, the want of space, of quiet, of all that can constitute a home, has driven to the gin-shop as the one solace that is left to him.
