At midnight the waters no longer shine as they career along, joyous in their green translucence, but, lit by the malignant moonbeams, they assume a more sombre colouring. At that hour the waves lose all their gaiety of movement, and, as they roll astern in great masses of damascened blue, from which an occasional steely flicker flashes forth sudden, like a knife passing from its sheath to the body of a victim, they assume a gloomily dangerous complexion. No such thoughts oppressed the minds of our adventurers as their junk passed within a hundred yards of the Rutnagherry lighthouse. It had been a prominent object to both of them for the last twenty minutes, for they had ordered the tindal to call them up that they might see their little craft well past those rocky dangers, which it proclaimed with a yellow ray. The beacon stood on a cliff which, cape-like, ran far away out from the land into the midst of the open sea; at least, so it seemed to them, as viewed by the doubtful light of the treacherous moon. After seeing the junk well abreast of the light, our seafarers, telling the tindal to hold on in the same direction until next morning, retired to their little cabin DANGER AHEAD. 27 and prepared to resume their slumbers. Hardly had they lain down, though, when a shout from one of the crew, followed by confused sounds which filled their minds with they knew not what forebodings of evil, made them simultaneously spring from their bunks and rush out on deck. What had happened ? In place of the composed quiet they had so recently withdrawn themselves from, alarm and wild hubbub reigned supreme.
