When we reached the station, we found a number of people were going also to Darjeeling, and travelled with Mr. H. and his two sisters, whom we knew already. After a few hours' travelling, we had to cross the river in a ferry boat, and here to our horror we found that our luggage was still at the Calcutta station; so Chowrie was promptly sent back for it. We had a very uncomfortable night on a narrow- gauge line, the Misses H. and myself sharing a carriage. In the early morning, when we changed into the little mountain railway, we found that Siva, our other boy, was missing, having no doubt got into the wrong end of the train and gone on somewhere else. This was rather a blow, for here we were both boy-less and luggage-less; however we left all instructions with a friendly guard, and started on our upward journey. What a climb we had ! Up and up we went, round the sides of mountains, on the verge of steep precipices, winding round and round, while we left the fields and tea plantations below us. Sometimes we passedthrough dense tropical jungle, and again our line ran along the regular road to the mortal terror of the cows, horses, etc., which we met, and often drove before us up hill for a long distance, their shrieking drivers vainly trying to stop them. Our carriages were somewhat on the Rigi railway principle, but the engine pulls, and does not push the train as on that line. I sat on the outside, at least nearest to the door had there been one, so that rounding curves or going on the edge of precipices, my feet were literally hanging in space. One of our fellow-passengers was a very young man, who was going to a tea plantation so...
