Excerpt from book: Goebel in 1882 argues that the hair like bristles in Typha take the place of sepals and petals . The pollen mother cells in the unbranched stamens are formed in four longitudinal peripheral strips of Uie floral axis thus making the pollen sacs cauline in origin. Oelakovsky holds that the lateral protuberances in the female inflorescence correspond to the spikelets of the grasses and Cyperaceae and that Typha is nearer related to the Cyperaceae than to the Araceae. The spikelets ae reduced growtl'S. The covering glumes of the blossoms in Typha are eithe the degenerated so- called trichoir, e forms as in T. augustifolia or they are entirely supressed. Ke argues too that the trichomes are really perigone leaves although they may be slit or weakened so that they look li..
