In a charter of William of Normandy (afterwards the Conqueror), dated a year before the Conquest, the parish of Saint Peter de Port is named; and there is no doubt of its great antiquity, though its original limits are not easily defined. Remains of a massive stone wall towards the sea are occasionally discovered beneath the houses and stores forming the eastern side of the High Street; and the ancient barriers to be met with in several of the old streets, are supposed to mark the line of boulevards which surrounded the town. In the reign of Edward I., that monarch ordered certain dues to be levied on ships entering the harbour, towards the erection of a pier; and in 1350, Edward III. directed a duty to be raised, for the purpose of walling in the town, as a protection against the hostile incursions it was subject to during his reign. The parish church of the town, though reputed to be the last built in the island, was consecrated in 1312, and was no doubt erected on the site of some early ecclesiastical structure. The town of St. Peter Port lies partly in a glen, leading up by several narrow valleys to the westward; and the hills rising above the glen are now covered with buildings, gardens, and spires.
