I have manifested thy name to the men which thou gavest me out of the world.?John xvn. 4, 6. Accokding to the fourth Gospel, a very remarkable conversation took place between Christ and his disciples immediately after they had eaten together their last Paschal Supper. As we might expect, Jesus was the principal speaker, and as He had now .a strong presentiment that his end was near, there is a great deal that is deeply pathetic in what He says. He knew that the ecclesiastical authorities of Jerusalem, alarmed by his teaching, were plotting his death; and therefore He seems to speak within the shadow of the cross. He referred to his own teaching, career, and doom, and warned his followers, troubled at his words, of the hardships which awaited themselves, as the preachers of the new religion, when He was no longer with them. Having thus spoken, we are told He lifted up his eyes to heaven and prayed for his disciples; and it is in the prayer that the words of the text occur. Jesus felt that He had come into the world, Heaven-sent, with a work to do, and that Hehad done it, and now, standing on the very verge of eternity, He could calmly say to his Father, I have glorified thee on the earth: I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do. What was this God-given work which Jesus could now say He had finished ? I think we have an explanation of this in the context: I have glorified thee on the earth?I have manifested thy name. These two things are not greatly different. In manifesting God we glorify God: and therefore we may safely say that the manifestation of God was the work which Jesus felt had bee...
