So says the text. That, I think, is its meaning. The eye sees much that is beautiful and wonderful; the colouring of earth, sky, and sea; the lavish wealth of lovely form as well as lovely hue which strews the face of the world; sees almost without looking, and when it does look through telescope or microscope, can cast its glances deep into the little, far into the vast. But it sees nowhere aught like this. The ear hears much that is grand or tender, ?the reverberating thunders, the dulcet harmonies; from the past, too, more than from the present, are borne in upon it the histories of things whichwere great and strange, causing it to eat the bread of tears, causing it to drink the wine of astonishment. But it hears no tale like this. The heart of man has responded always to the things which God has placed around him; has so far read their meaning, translated them into articulate speech; and the heart of man has reasoned from the seen to the unseen, has built Babel-towers of speculative thought, has dreamed great dreams; yea, in its ecstasy, has come near to gazing on the glories which are hid with God in heaven.
