Perhaps, the two avenues leading towards the mansion from the two principal entrances to the park, and converging upon the broad gravel area before the solid, heavy brick front; the trees towering aloft with dark umbrageous foliage; other tall full- headed elms, the time- old residence of countless rooks, flanking the massive pile at either end?perhaps, all these huge trees, with the dense shadows cast by them, even in sunny weather, rather add to the heavy effect of that style of architecture, which a certain epitaph-writer opined might provoke the earth to lie heavy on its chief promoter, when once he was laid to rest in her bosom. But whether or no, there was a sort of gloom about the mansion that was not easily dispelled by the brightest sunshine, or, for long together, by the cheeriest disposition if enforced to dwell among its shades.
