My wife's father, John Swincher, at his earliest recollection, lived near Baltimore, Maryland; had noknowledge of his parents, and but a faint recollection of one brother, who accompanied him to Kentucky, but soon started back for Baltimore, after which he was not heard from any more. John S., when a boy, was driving a double team for the people he lived with, on the road to Baltimore; the team became frightened and he was thrown under the loaded wagon, which passed over his left leg, crushing it so that it had to be amputated. He was married in Kentucky, ' to Jane McCammon, whose father came from Ireland and settled in South Carolina, being a land owner. A battle of the Revolutionary War was fought on his farm, and the dead was buried there. After this they emigrated to Kentucky, with a company traveling with pack- horses. After the marriage of John Swincher and .Jane McCammon, they lived near Lexington, Ken- EMIGRATION AND LOSING BYES. 69 tucky, and he worked at the cooper's trade for a livelihood. He was very stout and active, and could get around surprisingly well to only have one perfect leg, the other being but a wooden peg, of which I made several for him, after he had emigrated to Indiana, which was about the year 1817 or '18. They first stopped near Hanover, in Jefferson county, but in a few months, bought land in the North-West corner of the county where they settled down for life. A short time before coming to this State, he lost one of his eyes, from severe pains centering in it, until the eye-ball bursted and exuded from its socket, entirely disappearing, but he could see a little out of the other eye for about twelve years, when he lost it in the same manner, caus..
