Excerpt from book: This class sec no necessity for operating on a cervix so long as the patient can menstruate every month without remaining in bed at the time; can get up early in the morning every day in the year, and have fires and breakfast ready when her husband comes down-stairs. Or, if that is not the order, can bear one or more children at term, nurse them and care for them, beside attending to a thousand other duties. What if she is nervous, has dysmenorrhcea, menorrhagia, leucor- rhcea, dyspepsia, hysteria and generally out. of sorts?don't blame it to the laceration yet, but fill her up with tonics and drugs, and she must get well without surgical interference. Considering all lacerations which can be detected by touch as pathological, I believe they should all be improved by early operation, and thus avoid future trouble. There may be some exceptions (where the laceration is slight, and the lips lie parallel) but operation is clearly indicated where there is erosion or eversion of the tear. The longer such lacerations remain the more deeply constitutional symptoms become rooted and the longer it will take to regain health after the cervix has been repaired. The treatment which gives the only satisfactory results is that of dissecting out, with the knife, every portion of cicatricial tissue, particularly that portion which plugs the base of the tear; trimming away as much hypertrophic tissue as deemed necessary, re-shaping the neck and bringing the opposing surfaces evenly together with silver wire sutures. Leaving the wires for sixteen to eighteen days insures perfect healing, wheirreinoving them earlier often necessitates another trimming, or scarification of granulations, and re-suturing. The wires may remain as long as necessary without inconvenience to the patient. L...
