About the Book

EFFICIENCY OF MULTIPLE EXPANSION. The secret of success in the multiple cylinder engine lies in the threefold fact of (1) using high steam pressure, (2) expanding steam to the greatest extent, and (3) reducing the loss caused by cylinder condensation. Reasons for using high pressure steam are given in Section 5. But higher pressures than 90 pounds per inch would be of little or no value commercially without a corresponding increase in the rates of expansion; the two are inseparable. RATES OF EXPANSION. It has been wisely said by Prof. Thurston that Maximum expansion, as nearly adiabatic as practicable, is the secret of maximum efficiency. The most correct method of determining the proper number of expansions for a given initial steam pressure is to first establish what may be considered the best terminal pressure in the low pressure cylinder, and then figure back from it to the initial pressure in the highpressure cylinder, and allow such provision for loss at the various stages as exposure, absorption and other unavoidable causes may demand, but which should be carefully studied by the designer, and established by his best judgment. Allowances made in this treatise are not arbitrary, but simply assumed, for the purpose of simplifying the explanation. TABLE No. 2. Ibs. 5 51bsThen, if the steam pressure be limited to, say, 170 pounds gauge, that is to say, 185 pounds absolute, and the terminal pressure is regarded as per table No. 2 at six pounds abso., apply the following rule: Rule.?Divide the absolute initial steam pressure by the abso. terminal press, and the quotient will be the total number of expansions, Thu...
