In the former Part, I have endeavoured to explain the sixth chapter of John, and to controvert Cardinal Wiseman's interpretation of it in his fourteenth lecture. Strictly speaking, the fourteenth of Cardinal Wiseman's lectures is introductory to the two following lectures, and only indirectly touches upon the doctrine of transubstantiation; for the subject of transubstantiation does not arise in the sixth of John, which merely narrates a remarkable discourse of the Lord during the early days of His earthly ministry, long before the institution of the Last Supper. We now come to the consideration of the fifteenth lecture, in which the subject of transubstantiation does properly arise; and as Roman Catholics profess to attach so much importance to the precise form of words made use of by the Lord, the exigenciesof the argument suggest the propriety of ascertaining what they really were. I have already observed that there are three of the Evangelists who have described what occurred on the occasion of the Last Supper (Matt, xxvi., Mark xiv., and Luke xxii.); and on comparing these several accounts the one with the others, we shall find that no two of them are in perfect agreement.
