About the Book

This historic book may have numerous typos, missing text or index. Purchasers can download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. 1846. Not illustrated. Excerpt: ... evergreen, as the leaves fall in the winter, but not till the young ones are nearly ready to supply their place. In the spring some of these trees make a beautiful appearance, from the display of the bright purple tips of their female buds. When the tree is isolated, and has sufficient room to grow, its appearance is that of an elegant cone of verdure, as the branches have a decided tendency to hang down, and the stem is feathered quite to the ground. It is a tree comparatively of rapid growth. The soil most congenial for its growth is clay, which has a sufficient drainage by declivities, &c., to carry off the superfluous moisture. Its timber is considered to be almost indestructible in those countries where it is cultivated as a timber tree. It contains a great quantity of resin, and yields that kind of turpentine called Venice. The stag feeds readily on the young branches, and if care is not taken will destroy the leading shoot. The larch does not thrive on a substratum of sandstone: when the roots get deep, and approach to the sandstone, the tree makes no progress, but grows crooked. This is probably from the porous nature of the sandstone absorbing the moisture. Lime, or Linden Tree--Tilia. If the lime-tree is not indigenous, of which indeed there does not appear to be very clear evidence, it has at least been introduced into this country from a very early period, mention being made of it in our earliest writers on the subject, who all speak of it as well known in their time; and the small leaved, the T. E. Microphylla, is by some modern writers admitted to be a native tree, though the larger-leaved varieties are considered as exotic; and an almost conclusive argument that all the varieties are so, is, that it seldom or never ripens its seed in this country....
